The Donkey Who Tried to Be Too Clever

Once upon a time, a man heard that salt was cheaper near the sea. So, he went there and bought lots of salt. He loaded all the salt onto his donkey and started walking back home.

The donkey found the salt very heavy and walked slowly. As they crossed a narrow path by the river, the donkey slipped and fell into the water! When the salt touched the water, it melted. The bags became lighter, and the donkey felt much better. It happily walked the rest of the way, while the man was very upset.

A few days later, they went back to the sea. This time, the man bought even more salt to make up for his loss. Again, the donkey carried the heavy bags. And when they reached the same river path, the donkey remembered what happened before. It pretended to slip and fell into the water on purpose. The salt melted again, and the donkey felt free and happy.

The man started losing money and got tired of the donkey’s trick. So, he made a new plan.

Two days later, they went back to the sea, but this time the man didn’t buy salt. He bought sponges instead. Sponges are light when they are dry. As always, the donkey tried its old trick. It pretended to fall into the river again.

But this time, something unexpected happened! The sponges soaked up the water and became super heavy. When the donkey got out of the river, it could barely walk. Its ears drooped, its neck hung low, and it moved very slowly.

And that’s how the donkey learned a big lesson:
Being too clever can sometimes get you into trouble!
