The Clever Shepherd
Once upon a time, long, long ago, there lived a ruler named Shahmerdan.
One day, the ruler gathered all the people and gave them a difficult task:
"You must answer these two questions:
How many days' journey is it between the east and the west?
What is God doing right now?
If you cannot answer these questions within three days, you will all be executed!"
Everyone was terrified. They thought day and night for three days, but no one could find the answers.
When the three days were over, the king’s guards gathered the people in the square. No one had the answers.
At the foot of a great mountain, there was a young shepherd looking after his sheep.
He saw the worried faces of the people and asked a passing traveler what was happening.
The traveler said:
"The ruler asked two questions and gave three days to answer them.
No one has been able to answer, and now the people fear for their lives."
Hearing this, the shepherd felt sorry for the people.
He quickly mounted the traveler’s horse and rode to the gathering.
The ruler sat proudly on his throne and spoke:
"Whoever has the answers to my questions, step forward!"
The people looked down in fear, not daring to move.
Just then, a young man in a simple white robe and a worn-out hat pushed through the crowd and said:
"My king, I have found the answers!"
The people stared in shock.
The king, with a sharp look, said:
"Do you realize that if you answer incorrectly, you will lose your head?"
The shepherd nodded calmly:
"Yes, my king. I understand."
The king asked the first question:
"How many days' journey is it between the east and the west?"
The shepherd replied:
"Only one day's journey, my king."
The king frowned:
"How do you know?"
The shepherd explained:
"If it were two days' journey, the sun would stop halfway.
But the sun rises in the east and sets in the west within a single day.
Therefore, the distance must be just one day."
The king was impressed but moved on to the second question:
"And what is God doing right now?"
The shepherd replied:
"My king, please come down from your throne and let me sit there.
I will answer from your place."
Surprised but curious, the ruler agreed.
The shepherd sat on the throne and said loudly, for all to hear:
"Right now, God is appointing the shepherd to be king and making the king a shepherd."
The ruler was amazed by the young man’s cleverness.
He smiled and said:
"Such a wise man should not be punished."
He dismissed the crowd and let everyone go free.
From that day on, the people respected the clever shepherd greatly.
Whenever someone had a problem, they came to him for advice.
And they all lived happily ever after.
