The Fox and the Stork
Deep in a faraway forest, a fox and a stork lived as neighbors. Everyone who saw them admired how well they got along and always pointed to their friendship as an example. As word of their good relationship spread throughout the forest, one day the fox, who was secretly waiting for an opportunity, came across his neighbor the stork.
With a polite and kind voice, the fox said, "Good day, my dear neighbor, Brother Stork." The stork wanted to reply with the same kindness, but just as he was about to speak, the fox interrupted him.
"It would bring me great joy to share a meal this evening with such a kind and wonderful neighbor," the fox said, adding, "I would be upset if you turned down my invitation. Please don’t refuse me."
Touched by the fox’s kind words and invitation, the stork accepted, and they agreed to meet at the fox’s house for dinner.
As evening quietly settled over the forest, the stork knocked on the fox’s door, feeling quite hungry. The fox opened the door with sweet words as always, saying, "Welcome, my dear friend, my beloved neighbor. It may not be much, but I’ve prepared a delicious meal that I think you’ll enjoy," and welcomed the stork inside.
As soon as they sat at the table, the stork noticed that the fox had only prepared soup—and served it in a shallow plate. No matter how hard the poor stork tried, he couldn’t eat the soup with his long beak. The fox, knowing exactly what he had done, couldn’t stop himself from snickering and happily finished all the soup from his own plate.
The stork understood what was going on but had no choice but to swallow his pride along with his hunger. He realized that the fox had played a trick on him and decided he needed to get back at him.
He thanked the fox for the soup and went home with an empty stomach, already planning how to teach the fox a lesson.
After some time, the stork prepared a delicious meat dish and called the fox. "Brother Fox," he said, "you hosted me in your home and served me a meal. Now, I would like to return the favor and host you at my home tonight for a nice feast."
The fox was delighted by the invitation. When evening came, he knocked on the stork’s door. The wonderful smell of meat coming from the stork’s kitchen made the fox’s mouth water. The stork welcomed his guest in and invited him to the table.
As the fox sniffed the delicious aroma, he showered the stork with compliments. The stork went to the kitchen to bring the food and returned carrying the meal in tall, narrow containers with slim openings.
The fox tried and tried, but he simply couldn’t eat the meat. Not a single bite made it into his mouth. Meanwhile, the stork used his long beak to eat all the meat with ease.
When the fox was left hungry, he finally realized his mistake.
