Hanging Bread
In a small town in Anatolia, a baker named Mahmut Usta would hang a few loaves of bread in front of his shop every day. Poor people in the neighborhood could take these loaves for free. Mahmut Usta had learned this tradition from his grandfather.
One day, a young man entered the bakery and thanked Mahmut Usta. He explained that he had lost his father when he was a child and had gone through very difficult times with his mother. During those hard days, they never went hungry thanks to the bread Mahmut Usta had hung on the hook. Now that he had a good job, he wanted to repay his debt.
Mahmut Usta smiled and said:
“My dear son, this is not a debt. This is a tradition of kindness in our culture. If one day you help someone in need, this kindness will continue.”
This story is a beautiful example of the deeply rooted Anatolian tradition of “bread on the hook.” Even a small act of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life.
